A first birthday

Recipe for a successful birthday:
Take one small boy, and feed him his favorite dinner. Spaghetti and meatballs.

Bring on the cake.

Light it on fire.

Let him have his cake, and eat it, too.

Throw in a few new toys.  (Try to restrain the older sibling).  Try.

Then sit back and laugh.

And marvel at the passing of ONE year, one trip around the sun. One small, yet great big boy. Oh, Grant...One!?!

After a morning of swimming at the YMCA with our neighborhood friends, we ate cake! A happy day for a happy birthday.

He's two!

I'm exhausted.
I took the plunge and hosted a birthday brunch for Henry and his little playmates. Roughly 6 other toddlers and their parents helped us celebrate. Whew!!

He's exhausted.
He rallied (sugar rush?) and skipped his nap today (this has happened twice this week, and I hope it's not the start of a trend). He went to bed without any persuasion.

*Due to George's night shift schedule, his birthday this year was celebrated with coffee cake as a stand in for birthday cake. Not to toot my own horn, but I thought that was a clever exchange!  :)

Happy Birthday Charlotte!

Today we had a fun time going to a live broadcast of an Wisconsin based NPR show -- thanks to the residency program. It was definitely a dorky thing to do this morning, but we enjoyed it and our friends Neal and Meghan even made it onto the show.

After Henry napped for awhile, we stopped into a favorite place for brunch and had a lazy afternoon being silly with Henry. He is just so goofy right now. Lots of fun.

I will be working at the hospital tomorrow when some other friends stop by for dinner - so here it is a day early - Happy Birthday!

Birthday Boy

Henry is one and so much fun!
It is hard to believe how much Henry has grown and changed over the course of the last year. It has been an amazing journey and we look forward to many more birthdays!

We are having a good time with Meme this week playing with Henry and enjoying some downtime during George's week of vacation.

Henry is picking up many new gestures. He has learned to wave bye-bye, blow kisses, and finally signs "all done" at the end of a meal!

New Year and Another Year Older!

Each New Year brings another celebration, George's birthday. This year he joined the "thirty-somethings!" He claims it's not a big deal because I'm already charting the territory nine months before he does.

As a bonus, my sister, Jessica, was visiting us during her winter break. We took advantage of the on site babysitting and had the opportunity to enjoy some Indian cuisine. For those who are familiar we ordered (and please forgive any misspellings): stuffed nan (bread), palak paneer (creamed spinach), navarattan korma (veggie curried stew), and vegetable pakoras (veggie fritters). In a word: Delicious! Jessica was able to sample these new foods from our leftover box, and Henry got in on the action, too, polishing off the creamed spinach.

On New Year's day, we also enjoyed a little homemade meal. Standing in for birthday cake this year: homemade pecan pie. Yum!






Happy 30th Birthday, George!

My Birthday!

The BIG 3-0 !! THIRTY. Or as I like to call it, 20/10. I try not to get hung up on numbers (alright, I should try harder) but this seems like such a milestone. I once heard someone say that having kids made them feel younger. All I can say is their kids must have slept through the night from day 1. Lack of sleep is making me feel twice my age and cranky! Ok. Enough complaining.

I did have a lovely birthday. It was a nice sunny day and I spent it hanging out with my two favorite people, George and Henry. George and I enjoyed a nice take out meal from our new favorite Mexican place, Burrito Mundo, and had a yummy banana birthday cake with chocolate frosting. What more could a 30-yr old new momma ask for?!?

Charlotte neglected to mention the delicious brownies that she made for me - chocolatey with bits of Andes' mints - these things are amazing in brownies! Yum.

the following is some advanced blogging, folks...aka, it looks like something a 3rd grader might do...

Happy Birthday, George!

The new year comes with another celebration -- George's birthday! Although, as a trade off for Christmas, I had to work both New Years Eve day and New Years Day, we managed to get out toward the end of the week for a lovely birthday dinner.

George received an email for a free birthday burrito from one of our favorite burrito places in the area. After researching store hours on the internet however, we discovered that several locations closest to us have closed. Not wanting to use the gas to drive way out to the suburbs for a free burrito, we settled for something closer, and were delighted by what we found.

Recently, George saw a sign for Burrito Mundo and wanted to try it out. We started with their soup of the day, creamy corn and poblano, which was so sweet and creamy, then hot and fiery in your mouth all at once! We also had a nice serving of "green goodness" aka guacamole. For the main entree, we split an order of Mahi Mahi con Mango: Pan-roasted, achiote seasoned Mahi filet over Mundo black beans and rice, topped with mango salsa and plantain chips. It makes my mouth water just talking about it!

If anyone is familiar, in the Boston area there is a restaurant that has been high on George's favorites list called "East Coast Grill" -- Burrito Mundo was like a mini version, with the flavors we like (tropical fruit - mangoes, plantains, etc. combined with seasoned meat/fish dishes). In other words, a tango for the taste buds!

So for the next 3 months, George and I are the same age. Until March, when I, once again, become older and wiser!
